The era of Internet started in the University under the aegis of Department of Computer Science in the year 1999-2000.The University obtained the Internet bandwidth from Ernet, India and Initially, the Internet connectivity was limited to only two departments viz. Department of Computer Science & Department of Physics. A Central Internet facility was created in the Department of Computer Science for the rest of the Departments. In the Year 2002-03 the University established a Campus wide Network on Optical fibre backbone connecting all the Teaching departments and Administrative offices and the internet connectivity was extended to almost all the academic departments.

Most of the State Universities are overburdened with hundreds of affiliated colleges and as a step to decongest these Universities, Government has decided to establish Cluster Universities in the States. These Cluster Universities shall be created from the existing four to five Colleges that are located in close vicinity. The infrastructure development of the Cluster Universities is funded through the Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme of the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD).

The Government College for Women, Nawakadal, situated on the Southern bank of river Jehlum is the only institution of Higher Education for Women ideally located in Shehr- e -Khas (Down Town area of Srinagar city). The institution is dedicated to excellence in the field of higher learning & committed to the cause of empowerment of women through the instrument of education. It was established in 1961 with Arts and Science subjects and a Teaching faculty of 19 members with just 50 students. Presently it is the only Women's Institution in Kashmir Valley offering Commerce & Management Courses.
