HORTICULTURAL COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE [HCRI], PERIYAKULAM
The Department of Horticulture was established in 1971 with the founding of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The UG and PG programs were also introduced in the founding year. The Bachelor of Science (Horticulture) program began in 1972 and transferred to the College of Horticulture and Research Institute, Periyakulam in 1990.With the founding of the university in 1971, the Departments of Fruit, Flower and Spice Plants and Plantations were created. Subsequently, the Faculty of Vegetables and the Faculty of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants were established in 1979 and 2010 respectively. Previously, a joint PG program was offered, later four separate PG programs are offered by each department.After the establishment of various departments at HC&RI, TNAU and Coimbatore, intensive educational, research and expansion activities are carried out to promote various industries including fruits, vegetables, spices, plantation crops, floriculture, landscaping, medicinal and aromatic plants in terms of crops Improvement, production and post-harvest management. The result of research conducted at HC&RI in Coimbatore led to the release of 12 fruit plant varieties, 59,horticultural plant varieties, nine orchard and aromatic plant varieties, nine flowering plant varieties, one medicinal variety and improved varieties. Production technologies for various crops.Other than the Horticultural Department of Coimbatore, Dean (Horticulture) of HC&RI, Coimbatore has the right to direct the Horticultural Research Stations of Ooty, Yercaud, Palur and Aliyar Coconut Research Station, Veppankulam, the Agricultural Research Station, Pattukkottai and Technical Control of Paiyur Regional control research station, agricultural research station Bhavanisagar and root vegetable research station in Yethapur.
