The University is the brain child of Padmashree Dr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao a legendary figure and Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. It was inaugurated in 1986. The first chancellor of the university was none other than Late Dr. N.T.Ramarao Presently, the Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh is the Chancellor.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh renamed Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences as “Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences” by amending sub-section 2 of section 1 of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Act, 2022.
