India faces the major challenge of urbanization with a level of around 33% presently, expected to increase to over 50% by 2050. For the first time since independence, India has seen a greater absolute increase in urban population versus rural, and the number of towns in India has increased from 5,161 in 2001 to 7,935 in 2011, with about 53 cities having over 1 million population. This massive urban transformation in many ways defines one of India’s fundamental development.
