Established in 1962, Shivaji University derives its name from the esteemed Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The university's inauguration on November 18th, 1962, by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, marked a significant milestone. One of its primary goals was to address the educational needs of South Maharashtra. Spanning over Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara districts, the university accommodates approximately 300,000 students across 280 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. This region is renowned for its diverse socio-cultural heritage. Under the visionary leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Kolhapur emerged as a hub of educational opportunities, extending its reach to communities across South-Western Maharashtra and northern parts of Karnataka. Notably, this area is associated with Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, who championed education accessibility through his pioneering 'Earn and Learn' initiative. The founding objectives of the university, as outlined in the Shivaji University Act of 1962, included providing higher education opportunities to rural youth and fostering fundamental and applied research in science and humanities to stimulate regional growth and development.

The President of the UGC serves as the President of the GC of NAAC, while an eminent academician nominated by the President of the GC chairs the EC. The Director serves as the academic and administrative head of NAAC and is the member-secretary of both the GC and the EC. Additionally, NAAC receives guidance from advisory and consultative committees formed periodically to advise on its policies and activities.
