1. The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in India was originally established by the AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) under section 10(u) of the AICTE Act in 1994. Its primary aim was to evaluate the quality and competence of educational programs offered by institutions across various disciplines such as engineering, technology, management, pharmacy, architecture, and related fields, all of which are approved by the AICTE.
2. With effect from January 7, 2010, the NBA transitioned into an independent autonomous body. Its core objectives include ensuring the quality and relevance of technical education programs, particularly in professional disciplines like Engineering and Technology, Management, Architecture, Pharmacy, Hotel Management, and Catering Technology. This is achieved through the accreditation process, which evaluates programs offered by technical institutions.
3. In April 2013, the Memorandum of Association and Rules of NBA were amended to grant complete independence from the AICTE, both administratively and financially. The NBA conducts evaluations based on predefined norms, covering various aspects such as institutional objectives, governance, infrastructure, teaching quality, curriculum design, support services, and other factors deemed relevant by the NBA's General Council and Executive Committee. These evaluations are aimed at ensuring that graduates meet industry requirements effectively.
4. Throughout its existence, the NBA has continually updated its accreditation processes, parameters, and criteria to align with international best practices. The focus has shifted towards assessing program outcomes, emphasizing the practical application of knowledge and skills acquired by students. This evolution reflects the NBA's commitment to maintaining high standards and fostering continuous improvement in technical education across India.
