The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was established in November 1945 as a national-level apex advisory body with the aim of conducting a comprehensive survey of the available facilities for technical education and promoting development in a coordinated and integrated manner across the country. The AICTE Act was formulated to establish the council, intending to facilitate proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education system throughout India. Its objectives include promoting qualitative improvements in technical education alongside planned quantitative growth, as well as regulating and maintaining norms and standards within the technical education system and related matters.

Established in 1962, Shivaji University bears the name of the illustrious Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Its inauguration on November 18th, 1962, by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, marked a significant milestone in the region's educational landscape. The university's inception aimed to address the regional educational needs of South Maharashtra, encompassing Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara districts. Currently, it boasts a vast network of 280 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes, catering to approximately 300,000 students. This region holds a rich socio-cultural heritage, with roots deeply embedded in history. Under the visionary leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Kolhapur emerged as an educational hub, offering opportunities to diverse social strata. This legacy continued with figures like Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, who championed the cause of universal education through innovative schemes like 'Earn and Learn.' The establishment of Shivaji University under the Shivaji University Act of 1962 aimed to democratize higher education, especially for rural youth, and foster research in science and humanities to spur regional development. Commencing with 34 affiliated colleges and 14,000 students across five Post-graduate Departments, the university has burgeoned over the years. Presently, it houses 34 Postgraduate Departments on campus and collaborates with 280 affiliated colleges, serving a student populace of 300,000. Offering education across ten major faculties spanning Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Engineering, and Technology, Shivaji University remains committed to its founding principles of accessibility, research excellence, and regional development.
