Its journey commenced in 1986 when it was established by the Government of Madhya Pradesh as the Government Engineering College (GEC), Bhopal. Recognizing its potential, the government accorded it autonomous status in 1998, renaming it Bhopal Engineering College.

In a significant development, the institution was declared a constituent college of Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (Technological University of the State of Madhya Pradesh) in July 2002, as per the directive of the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
