Established in 1962, Shivaji University derives its name from the illustrious Maratha Warrior and founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The university's inauguration on November 18, 1962, by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, marked the beginning of a significant educational journey. It was established with the primary aim of meeting the educational needs of South Maharashtra. Over the years, Shivaji University has expanded its reach, currently encompassing three districts: Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara, hosting approximately 300,000 students across 280 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. This region holds a rich and diverse socio-cultural heritage, shaped by visionary leaders like Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the princely ruler of Kolhapur, who spearheaded social reforms and educational initiatives. Under his guidance, Kolhapur emerged as a hub of educational opportunities, extending its reach to South-Western Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka. Additionally, the legacy of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, renowned for his innovative 'Earn and Learn' scheme, further underscores the region's commitment to expanding access to education.
When Shivaji University was established through the Shivaji University Act of 1962, it was tasked with several objectives, including providing rural youth with access to higher education, and fostering fundamental and applied research in various fields to drive regional growth and development.
From its modest beginnings with 34 affiliated colleges and approximately 14,000 students, Shivaji University has undergone significant growth and transformation. Today, it boasts 280 affiliated colleges and a student population of over 300,000. The university offers education across ten major faculties, spanning Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, and Engineering and Technology, reflecting its commitment to comprehensive and diverse educational offerings.
DBATU: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University was established by the Government of Maharashtra under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Act, No. XXII of 1989, initially as a Unitary University. However, in 2016, the Government of Maharashtra converted it into an Affiliating Technological University through the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Act, No. XXIX of 2014, expanding its jurisdiction to cover the entire state of Maharashtra. Currently, the university affiliates with 272 institutes, catering to a total student population of 136,534.
Spanning across 468 acres, the sprawling campus serves as a hub of academic excellence, drawing talented students from across the state. The university is dedicated to grooming these students into skilled engineers and proficient technocrats, equipped with the knowledge and expertise to thrive in their respective fields. Offering state-of-the-art laboratories with advanced testing and analysis facilities, the university extends its resources for the benefit of industries. Additionally, it provides essential amenities such as conference halls, auditoriums, playgrounds, workshops, and computing facilities to facilitate holistic learning experiences.
