The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was established in November 1945 as a national-level apex advisory body with the aim of conducting a comprehensive survey of the available facilities for technical education and promoting development in a coordinated and integrated manner across the country. The AICTE Act was formulated to establish the council, intending to facilitate proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education system throughout India. Its objectives include promoting qualitative improvements in technical education alongside planned quantitative growth, as well as regulating and maintaining norms and standards within the technical education system and related matters.

Established in 1962, Shivaji University bears the esteemed name of the Great Maratha Warrior and founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, inaugurated this esteemed institution on 18th November 1962. The University was envisioned with a key objective of meeting the educational needs of South Maharashtra regionally. Spanning over three districts - Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara - Shivaji University oversees the education of approximately 300,000 students across 280 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes.
This region of Maharashtra is renowned for its rich socio-cultural heritage, nurtured under the visionary leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the princely ruler of Kolhapur. His efforts transformed the city into an educational hub, providing opportunities for all classes and communities in South-Western Maharashtra and northern parts of neighboring Karnataka. Notably, this land also reveres Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, whose innovative 'Earn and Learn' scheme revolutionized education accessibility.
When Shivaji University was established through the Shivaji University Act of 1962, it was entrusted with several objectives, including the democratization of higher education for rural youth and the promotion of fundamental and applied research to foster regional growth and development.
From its modest beginnings with 34 affiliated colleges and approximately 14,000 students across five Post-graduate Departments, the University has flourished over the years. Today, it boasts an extensive network of 280 affiliated colleges, catering to the educational needs of over 300,000 students. The campus hosts 34 Postgraduate Departments, offering education across 10 major faculties. Through its commitment to academic excellence and regional development, Shivaji University continues to be a beacon of opportunity and progress in Maharashtra's educational landscape.
