India boasts one of the most expansive and diverse education systems globally, marked by privatization, widespread expansion, and increased autonomy. This evolution has facilitated greater access to higher education, alongside the introduction of programs in emerging fields. However, it has also prompted concerns regarding the quality and relevance of higher education. To address these issues, the National Policy on Education (NPE) of 1986 and the Programme of Action (PoA) of 1992 outlined strategic measures, advocating for the establishment of an independent national accreditation agency.

In response, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) was founded in 1994 as an autonomous body under the purview of the University Grants Commission (UGC), with its headquarters situated in Bengaluru. The primary objective of NAAC, as articulated in its vision statement, is to embed quality assurance as an integral aspect of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
