Its inception on 18th November 1962 was graced by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. The university's primary aim was to address the educational needs of South Maharashtra. Its jurisdiction spans across three districts: Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara, serving approximately 300,000 students across 280 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. This region boasts a rich socio-cultural heritage, nurtured under the visionary leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, who transformed it into an educational hub in the early 20th century. The University, established under the Shivaji University Act of 1962, aimed to democratize higher education, promote research in science and humanities, and foster regional growth.
