The CAT 2025 results have been released. Candidates are advised to carefully review the shortlisting criteria of different IIMs and apply to the right combination of IIM and non-IIM institutions.
Following the release of the CAT 2025 results, the focus for MBA aspirants has shifted from scores to the chances of being shortlisted. One of the most common questions at this stage is what percentile can be considered safe for receiving an interview call from the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
While IIMs do not declare a fixed "safe percentile," admission experts suggest that shortlisting is based on a composite score that includes CAT performance, academic record, work experience, and category-wise criteria. Nevertheless, based on past trends and expected cut-offs for the current admission cycle, certain percentile ranges are generally considered safer than others.
IIM Kozhikode has declared the CAT 2025 results. The analysis below is based on the shortlisting criteria published by IIMs in previous years and discussions with admission experts.
|
CAT Percentile Range |
Likely Shortlisting Outcome |
|
99.5 percentile and above |
Strong chance of calls from IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta (profile dependent) |
|
98–99.49 percentile |
High probability of calls from IIM Lucknow, Kozhikode and Indore |
|
95–97.99 percentile |
Good chances at new IIMs; limited old IIM calls with a strong profile |
|
90–94.99 percentile |
Baby IIMs, CAP IIMs and several top non-IIM institutes |
|
Below 90 percentile |
Limited IIM chances; better options among non-IIM B-schools |
This year, 12 candidates have scored a 100 percentile. For IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, a percentile of 99.5 and above is generally considered safe only for candidates with a strong academic record and, in many cases, work experience. In previous years, even candidates with 99+ percentile scores have not received interview calls due to low marks in Class 10, Class 12, or graduation.
Candidates in the 98-99 percentile range have a good chance at IIM Lucknow, Kozhikode, and Indore, especially those who benefit from academic or gender diversity criteria.
Each IIM follows its own shortlisting formula. Besides the overall CAT percentile, several other factors play a crucial role:
Options for Candidates Scoring Between 90 and 95 Percentile
Candidates whose scores fall between the 90th and 95th percentile should not underestimate their chances. The newer and smaller IIMs regularly shortlist candidates in this range. In addition, several well-known non-IIM institutions such as FMS Delhi, SPJIMR, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI New Delhi, TAPMI, and KJ Somaiya also consider candidates in this percentile bracket, based on their profile and selection criteria.
Candidates are advised to carefully track the shortlisting criteria of different IIMs, apply to the right combination of IIM and non-IIM institutions, and begin preparing for the WAT-PI stage without waiting for the call announcements.
