The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a highly competitive national-level examination for prestigious engineering, technology and architecture postgraduate programmes. Every year, thousands of candidates compete to get admission into top-tier institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
One of the major factors that determines admission is the GATE cutoff, which varies every year and across institutes. Candidates can check the qualifying GATE cutoff scores for NIT Trichy, Surat, Rourkela and other institutes here. Candidates can check GATE cutoff trends for MTech admissions in NITs, factors affecting GATE scores, and more. This analysis will help you to estimate the expected cutoff and plan your strategy for GATE preparation in future. IIT Roorkee has released the list of GATE AIR-1 toppers on March 25.

GATE cutoff is the minimum score or rank of candidates to be eligible for admission to postgraduate programmes in various institutes. The cutoff marks vary depending on the following factors:
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are among the most sought-after engineering colleges in India. They offer postgraduate programs in several engineering disciplines. After the IITs, the NITs are the next best destination for GATE-qualified candidates. Each NIT has its GATE cutoff (branch-wise), which is influenced by factors such as the institute's reputation in the NIRF rankings, popularity of the course, and regional demand.
The factors that influence GATE cutoff scores in NITs for admission to MTech programmes are -
IIT Roorkee announced the GATE 2025 results on March 19, along with branch-wise cutoff scores and a list of top candidates. Candidates seeking admission to MTech in CS, ME, CE, EC, EE or DA in top NITs can check the cutoff scores here. NIT cutoff score guidance for GATE 2025 is now available. Stay tuned for updates on GATE cutoff scores and guidance. Candidates can also check previous years' GATE cutoff score trends for NIT admission and estimate their admission chances and minimum marks required for admission to NITs. The NIT admission process is regulated by centralised counselling for MTech or CCMT.

The GATE opening and closing scores will be determined during counselling. The opening score in GATE determines the highest GATE score of candidates admitted to a particular program and category during counselling. On the other hand, the closing score is the lowest GATE score of a candidate admitted to a program and counselling category. It may vary depending on the course, institute and category, such as General, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC/ST and PWD.

It is important for candidates seeking admission to postgraduate programs to understand the trends in GATE 2025 cutoffs for NITs. While cutoffs vary every year, certain patterns remain the same: Popular branches like CSE, ECE and ME generally have higher GATE cutoffs. Top-tier NITs like NIT Trichy, Warangal and Surathkal have more competitive cutoffs. Reservation policies significantly impact cutoff scores, with cutoffs for reserved categories being lower. Candidates should aim for a GATE 2025 score at least 10-15% higher than the previous year's cutoff to be on the safe side. Keeping these factors in mind, candidates can set realistic goals and increase their chances of securing a seat in their desired NIT and course.
