The Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to extend the exemption for students who have basic knowledge of mathematics to study mathematics in Class 11 for the academic year 2025-26. The board has directed school principals to confirm whether such children have the aptitude and ability to study mathematics in Class 11 before they are allowed to choose the subject.
CBSE said that this decision will no longer be valid after the new study pattern is adopted as per the guidelines of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE).
The board underlined that once the subjects are finalised for the List of Candidates (LOC) for the 2025 board exams, no changes will be made to the available courses. "Schools are requested to pass on this information to parents/students so that necessary action can be taken. However, once the subjects are entered in the LOC, no further changes will be accepted."
In the earlier sessions, CBSE had given relaxation to the students who were taking the Mathematics (Basic) subject in Class 10 to take the Mathematics (041) subject in Class 11/12 due to the pandemic and other issues.
For the session 2025-2026 onward, the rules have been decided by the CBSE Board.
