Students are now required to enter their APAAR ID when registering for board exams. The decision was approved at a meeting of CBSE's governing body in June.
APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It was conceived under the New Education Policy, 2020. In other words, it's an identifcation number which is associated with enrolment and under which the entire education journey of a student from pre-primary to higher education can be traced.
The APAAR ID will be distinct and will be there for the entire period of your education. The government has also claimed that the APAAR ID will not only prevent fake education certificates but that students' APAAR ID will serve as an authentication link.
The proposal in June at the CBSE governing body meeting was to use the APAAR ID as part of board exam registration.
Previously, the board had been requiring schools to submit lists of candidates for the board examinations for classes 10 and 12, and the registration of students for classes 9 and 11. The minutes of the meeting also indicate that there was no way to connect these records to any “standardised identification system, resulting in inconsistencies and lack of verification in the database”.
The minutes read: "The Ministry of Education has now made APAAR ID mandatory for all school students as part of the Digital Public Infrastructure for Education. APAAR ID is intended to create a lifelong and accessible digital academic record of every student, while easing data management and improving transparency in the education system."
After deliberation, the board then decided that the linking of student registration to the APAAR ID would take place in time for the 2026 board exams.
"The committee members unanimously referenced the proposal to link the registration to the APAAR ID... and the list of examinees. The chairman... observed that requiring all students to link their APAAR ID would enhance the precision of data and depurpare duplicate data," the minutes read.
Students or their guardians provide information such as name, age, date of birth, sex, and a photo and any aadhaar number. This information will undergo verification via Aadhaar authentication. In the last two years, consent forms have been sent out to all schools in Delhi to provide consent from guardians. Various consultations and meetings have taken place with various stakeholders.
Although students did not have to register for the APAAR ID, it is a benchmark towards making it mandatory and linking to board exam registration.
