IIT Guwahati Conducts 27th Convocation 2025 – Over 2,000 Graduates Honoured

IIT Guwahati celebrated its 27th convocation ceremony, conferring degrees on more than 2,000 graduating students across various disciplines.

IIT Guwahati Convocation 2025: This year, a total of 2,093 students from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati received degrees in various disciplines at the 27th Convocation Ceremony. The graduates included 1,005 students with B.Tech. and B.Des. degrees, and 556 students with M.Tech. and M.Des. degrees. In addition, 270 students earned doctorates and dual degrees (Master’s + PhD), while 172 students graduated with M.Sc. degrees. The ceremony also recognized 51 M.A. graduates, 18 M.S. (Research) students, and 21 MBA graduates. The event notably celebrated the graduation of 22 students from the first B.Tech. class from the Mehta School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Sreehari C., who completed his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering, earned the highest score among the entire undergraduate class and was awarded the President of India's Gold Medal. Abhishek Gautam, a graduate in Engineering Physics, received the prestigious Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Among the postgraduate students, Anubhav, who earned his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, received the Assam Governor's Gold Medal. Souraja Kundu, a graduate in Electronics and Communication Engineering, received the Assam Governor's Gold Medal. In addition, the Institute recognized 16 students with Silver Medals for their outstanding academic achievements.

Dr. Rajendra Singh, D. Houser Banks Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Clemson University, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor, along with J. D. Patil, President, Indian National Academy of Engineering, who attended as the Guest of Honor. Dr. S.K. Srivastava, Acting Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati, presided over the event, while Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, presented the Convocation report. During his address, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, stated, “Nationally and internationally, IIT Guwahati has remained ranked 7th among the top engineering institutions in the country, 9th in the overall category, and 10th in the research category in the All India Rankings 2024, prepared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). In the 2026 QS Rankings, the institute was ranked 42nd worldwide in the category of research citations per faculty and 334th in the 2026 World University Rankings.

The President of India's Gold Medal is awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest cumulative performance index among all eligible candidates graduating with a Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Design degree.

During his address, Guest of Honor J. D. Patil said, “For the graduating generation, today is the day you begin to apply your academic knowledge in the real world. Institutes like IIT Guwahati contribute to producing talent capable of leading the country towards the collective goal of Viksit Bharat. What drives success and sustained growth is the ability to start doing things a little differently. Engineers play a key role in the nation’s technological development, be it for national security or any other stream of progress. As you move forward, always look for opportunities to contribute more, not only through your work, but also through leadership, innovation, and service to the nation.”

During his address, Dr. S. K. Srivastava, Interim Chairman of the Board of Directors of IIT Guwahati, emphasized the importance of adopting an innovative approach in a fast-paced world. He highlighted IIT Guwahati's remarkable contributions to national development through collaborations with various state and central government agencies. He urged the graduating class to pursue their academic and professional journeys by making responsible and wise decisions.
