Mumbai's academic calendar is facing a rare pause, with school, college and now university exams disrupted, and students having to wait until the weather conditions improve to resume their normal routine.
The University of Mumbai has officially postponed all exams scheduled for August 19, 2025, due to heavy rains in the city and a red alert being issued. The university released a circular on Monday confirming that the postponed exams will now be held on August 23, 2025, and their timings will remain the same.
The notice, signed by Dr Pooja Raundale, director, Board of Examinations and Assessment, has been sent to all affiliated colleges and university departments, instructing them to inform students as soon as possible.
The decision comes after the Maharashtra government and BMC directed the closure of all schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar on August 18 due to severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Now, with the University of Mumbai postponing its examinations, academic activities across the city have been further disrupted.
The university has clarified that despite the revision in the exam date, the exam timings will remain unchanged. Students are advised to keep getting updates through the official channels of the university and their respective colleges to avoid any confusion.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts and warned of extremely heavy rains in the next 48 hours. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors.
