Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be given a new category in the NIRF 2025 rankings, which are anticipated to be released in early August. Notably, in order to deter academic dishonesty, it will also apply negative marking for research publications that are withdrawn, with higher sanctions anticipated in subsequent years.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework, or NIRF 2025, will be released in the first week of August, as in past years. The National Board of Accreditation will get the ranks out for public viewing. The Ministry of Education will make an official announcement for the release time and date.
The NIRF rank is released once a year. Teaching, learning, research, graduation results, outreach, and perception are some of the several parameters used to rate India's higher education institutions.
The addition of a new category dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is among the key modifications to the NIRF framework in 2025.
A significant change has been introduced to the research component of the rankings in addition to the incorporation of the new SDG category. The system will feature negative marking for research paper retractions for the very first time. Based on NBA chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe, a provision has been established to give negative weightage based on the number or percentage of retracted publications.
The chairman said that even though the penalty this year will be minimal, "the gravity of negative scoring would increase" in future years until the problem is resolved.
Updates to the current evaluation process will be incorporated into the 2025 rankings alongside the new items. The "Research and Professional Practices" parameter, measuring institutions on publication number, quality (as measured by citations), and other research-related indicatives, is the exact location where the negative scoring system for retracted articles will be applied.
Negative marking of retracted research papers will be proposed by NIRF for the first time. A technique has been devised by the NBA to calculate a negative weighting based on the number or percentage of publications retracted by an institution. This action is consistent with NIRF's mission to discourage academic misconduct and advance research integrity.
Experts and educators have emphasized the need for the framework to grow more inclusive and comprehensive, even as they appreciate the additional inclusions. Concerns remain over the lack of classroom evaluations, student surveys, and alumni involvement.
