The next hearing of NEET UG 2024 is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on July 22, 2024.
The Supreme Court of India has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to publish the NEET UG 2024 exam results on its website by 20 July 2024 noon. This order comes amid the ongoing hearings concerning allegations of examinations of the paper leak in the exam.
During the hearing, senior counsel Narender Hooda, representing the petitioners, defended the transparency of the results and suggested that the NTA publish the central marks obtained by the candidates. Advocate Tushar Mehta representing the Union of India and NTA and senior advocate Naresh Kaushik also participated in the discussions.
The Supreme Court specified in its order that NTA must publish the marks obtained by students without revealing their identity. The results must be declared city and centerwise.
The court also ordered that the materials collected by the Bihar Police, including the investigation report of the Economic Offenses Wing, be submitted to the court by 5:00 pm on July 20, 2024. The next hearing is scheduled for July 22, 2024, at 10:30 am.
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the need for a detailed examination of the Bihar Police report, stating, “We will continue on Monday at 10:30 AM so that we can conclude by noon. We would like to have a copy of the Bihar police report.”
The Supreme Court's decision will affect around 24 lakh students who appeared for the NEET UG 2024 exam. The petitions, which number more than 40, include demands to cancel the exam, retest and investigate the alleged irregularities. The bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra noted that any decision regarding a re-examination must be based on concrete evidence of widespread compromise.
Chief Justice Chandrachud remarked on the distribution of top candidates across states, noting, “I have analyzed the top 100. AP got 7, Bihar got 7, Haryana 4, Delhi 6, Maharashtra 4, Tamil Nadu 6 etc. So it shows top 100 is distributed across 12 states and one UT. The proof of the pudding is in the eating so we need to see how many from 1563 who took re-test appear in the top 100... NTA will tell us that.”
The Court's ruling aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the examination process and at the same time address the concerns raised by the petitioners regarding the integrity of the NEET UG 2024 examination.
