Top IITs' CSE cutoff has fallen after JoSAA round 1 seat allotment. A descriptive analysis of the admission cutoff for the most sought-after course at the IITs is given below.
This year computer science (CSE) cutoff has been reduced in top IITs. While the decline was small in IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, significant declines were observed in IIT Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur and Madras.
Compared to 2023, the JEE Advanced cut-off for admission to IIT Bombay dropped marginally from 66 to 68 and IIT Delhi from 115 to 116. However, other top IITs faced even bigger declines in performance. CSE Admission Ranks: IIT Kanpur dropped from 215 to 248, IIT Roorkee dropped from 396 to 481, IIT Kharagpur dropped from 261 to 414 and IIT Madras from 144 to 159.
JEE advanced cut-off for IIT admission is decided based on the cut list after each round of counselling. So the higher the level, the lower the cutoff.
After the first JoSAA seat allotment for 2024, the JEE Advanced cut-off for CSE courses from IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur has reached a scant eight years. However, in IIT Madras, though the cutoff has come down compared to last year, it is still higher than the cutoff observed between 2016 and 2022.
Generally, in top IITs for CSE courses, the final rank is maintained or increased by 2-3 ranks after the first round. Hence, JoSAA 2024 fifth-round completion is considered the lowest in 8 years.
Here is the JEE Advanced 2024 cutoff analysis for courses of top IITs after the JoSAA first round:

IIT 2024 admission is based on the JEE Advanced 2024 score of 48,248 primary seats competing for 17,740 seats spread over 23 IIT (JoSAA) queries. The second round of the JoSAA seat allotment process is scheduled for June 27.
Ques. What's happening with the CSE cutoff at the top IITs?
Ans. JEE Advanced final rank has dropped in Computer Engineering (CSE) in some colleges. These are the top IITs for 2023. This means the admission limit has been reduced.
Ques. How significant is this decrease?
Ans. The decrease varies across IITs. IIT Bombay and Delhi saw a slight drop, while IIT Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur, and Madras experienced a more substantial decline. This means that the CSE final rank has reached its lowest level in eight years since the first round of JoSAA seat allocation in 2024.
Ques. Are there any specific numbers to illustrate the decrease?
Ans. Sure. Here's a comparison of a few IITs:
Ques. Why might the cutoff be lower this year?
Ans. There are so many reasons, it's hard to pinpoint a specific reason. Factors such as the difficulty of the test, the way students work per section and the number of candidates choosing different areas play an important role.
Ques. Does this mean it's easier to get into CSE at these IITs now?
Ans. The lower cutoff indicates competition for some IITs than in previous years. However, CSE in these institutes is very popular and you still need JEE Advanced to get a seat.
