In a post, the education minister said that 3,09,667 valid applicants have enrolled for admission to 460 colleges affiliated to 17 state universities.
The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) has announced the counselling schedule for WBJEE 2025, paving the way for undergraduate admissions to engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy programmes for the academic year 2025-26. As per the scheduled timeline, the seat matrix will be made available on August 27, following which the registration and choice filling process will begin from August 28 on the board's official website wbjeeb.nic.in.
Candidates will have time till September 1 to complete the registration and submit their preferences for courses and institutes. The results of the first round of seat allotment based on the options submitted by the candidates will be announced on September 3. The counselling process will be conducted in two phases, including registration, fee payment, choice filling, seat allotment and institute reporting.
As West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu has pointed out in a post, there are 460 colleges under 17 state universities where the admission process has begun. The publication of the merit list for undergraduate courses was delayed due to legal complexities and this led to uncertainty among students, many of whom had enrolled in private higher education institutions in West Bengal or migrated to other states, as several months had passed since the higher secondary exams were held in February.
The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Calcutta High Court order directing the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB) to cancel the Joint Entrance Examination for Medicine and Allied Sciences (Postgraduate) for 2024-25 and prepare a fresh merit list.
Following the Supreme Court order, the WBJEEB published the merit list of JEE candidates who took the exam in April, while the Higher Education Department started uploading the names of candidates on a central portal for admission to undergraduate courses from August 22.
The education minister said in the post that 3,09,667 valid applicants have enrolled for admission in 460 colleges affiliated to 17 state universities.
"Due to legal complications, the publication of the merit list was getting delayed, which made us, both the candidates and their parents, very worried. Now the process of allocating seats to the candidates based on their preferences has begun," he said. Basu said the first phase of uploading the merit list will continue till August 25.
There are a total of 4,02,557 seats where candidates can study in over 100 subjects. Earlier on August 7, the Calcutta High Court found that the WBJEEB had "clearly violated" its previous order on reservation for OBC candidates and directed it to re-draw the merit list and publish a fresh panel providing 7 per cent reservation for 66 categories of OBC candidates recognised by the West Bengal Backward Classes Department before 2010.
However, on Friday, a bench of the Supreme Court stayed the high court order. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said the merit list for admission to UG courses in various colleges has been uploaded on the central admission portal and hoped that other pending issues would also be resolved in a similar fashion.
"Due to some legal disputes, we had to wait for several days for the publication of the results. But this was not done intentionally. We will ensure that no candidate faces any inconvenience due to the delay in the publication of the results," she said.
