The college was established in September 1966 to provide higher education to female students, especially those who are socially and economically disadvantaged. A.V.Kanthamma College for Women has completed 50 years of providing college services to rural students. The college is the only college that offers graduate studies in science to rural and poor students from the surrounding area. The motto of the institution is "Knowledge and Virtues". Thus, the college continues to provide higher education to poor rural students living in the remote areas of Hassan. Most students are economically and socially disadvantaged.
