Shivaji University, founded in 1962, pays homage to the renowned Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The university was inaugurated on 18th November 1962 by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, with the primary aim of meeting the educational needs of South Maharashtra. Its jurisdiction spans three districts – Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara – with approximately 300,000 students enrolled in its 280 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. This region is renowned for its rich socio-cultural heritage. Under the progressive leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the city of Kolhapur emerged as an educational hub at the beginning of the 20th century, providing educational opportunities for all classes and communities in South-Western Maharashtra and northern parts of neighboring Karnataka. This region is also associated with Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, who advocated for mass education through his innovative 'Earn and Learn' scheme. The Shivaji University Act of 1962 aimed to provide higher education opportunities to rural youth, conduct research in science and humanities, and promote regional growth and development.
In its inception, the University began with 34 affiliated colleges and approximately 14,000 students, along with five Post-graduate Departments on campus. Presently, the university has expanded to 280 affiliated colleges with around 300,000 students and 34 Postgraduate Departments on campus. It offers education across 10 major faculties, including Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Engineering, and Technology.
