City College was started by Ananda Mohan Bose and the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj in 1881. In 1961, the college was trifurcated into three separate colleges–Rammohan College (morning college), City College (day college), and Ananda Mohan College (evening college). Till 2017, the college used to be administered by the Brahmo Samaj Education Society, a society constituted by the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. Since then, it became a grant-in-aid college under the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal no longer administered by the Brahmo Samaj Education Society.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

The Library of Ananda Mohan College was established since the inception of the college. Before August 1984, the three colleges (Rammohan College, City College, and Ananda Mohan College) shared a common library. Since then, Ananda Mohan College has had a separate library. The college library is located on the first floor of the main building of the college and it has a floor area of approximately 1000 sq. ft.

As on 31 March 2016, the library has a collection of more than 22,277 books which also includes some old, rare books and valuable reference books. The library remains open on all working days.

Canteen:

The college has two separate newly renovated canteens for staff and students. In addition, the students have one pantry facility. The subsidized canteen offers varieties of nutritious and delicious menus and safe drinking water. In a specially constructed building, the canteen provides a healthy scope for students to discuss various academic and other issues during their off periods.

Games and Sports:

The college has no big playground and at the time of Annual Sports, the college hires a playground every year. Though some infrastructure facilities are available for indoor games. The Boys’ Common Room is equipped with Table Tennis Board and Carrom Board.
