The Assam Institute of Management was established in 1988 as an autonomous institute of the Government of Assam. Previously, the state government had conducted several diagnostic studies, which identified management inefficiencies and the lack of professionally trained management personnel as the main causes of the poor performance of state-owned enterprises and various state-sponsored projects.  In this regard, the Government of Assam has promoted the Assam Institute of Management as an autonomous institute under the Department of Public Enterprises. In 1997, the Assam government changed the institute's reporting department by a Cabinet decision as part of its administrative reform program. In recognition of the Institute's contribution to management education, the Assam Government reorganized and expanded the Institute's Board of Trustees and under the September 2008 Circular, the Institute was placed under the Directorate of Educational Engineering of the Assam Government.
