Ahmedabad Medical School was created in 1871 and it became affiliated with the Civil Hospital in the city of Ahmedabad. The School had humble beginnings, starting with 14 students who pursued hospital assistant training. In 1879, Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy donated Rs.20,000/- and the school was renamed after him as B. J. Medical School. The school grew and became affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay in 1917. By 1946, the school obtained affiliation with Gujarat University in 1956.

Medical College, providing diplomas for L.C.P.S.In 1951, The college was affiliated to Gujarat University for its undergraduate courses. The postgraduate courses were affiliated with Gujarat University in 1956.

The college campus has its 2500-bedded Hospital with all infrastructure, modern equipment, and departments.

BJMC Library :

The campus has a centrally air-conditioned library with a rich collection of selected books in all subjects. The library has a wide stock of books by national and international authors, national and international journals, and periodicals.

BJMC Residencies :

The campus has residential flats for faculty members and staff. The residential area is located in a pollution-free area and provides healthy conditions for living. The residencies are provided with cable TV, a telecom facility, 24-hour security, water supply, and electricity supply.

BJMC Hostel :

The campus has a fully furnished separate hostel for Boys & Girls with an attached bathroom. The hostel is equipped with 24 hours purified drinking water supply, a hot water system, a wide range of in-door and out-door sports facilities, a recreation hall, a cafeteria, and mess with all infrastructure to meet the requirements of the students, its dining hall is provided with comfort and cable TV and telecom facility.

24-hour security arrangements are being provided through well-trained and experienced security services.

The information needs of 2400 medical students, teachers, and research workers id catered to by the central library which was established in the year 1946. B.J. Medical College Library is the largest resource of bio-medical literature in Gujarat state. It is housed in the college building with a seating capacity of 500 persons. It has a collection of 41,000 books and back volumes of journals, 3434 dissertations, 2032 reports, proceedings, and an annual subscription of 236 current journals. Besides the regular members, it is open to the entire biomedical community of the state.

Services Offered :

Various services offered are reference, literature search (manually), current awareness services, and bibliographical and inter-library loan services. It also provides specialized services viz. Medline Database, Photocopying, Internet, E-Mail, and Audio-visual services to its users.

Admission Procedure

Each year 250 seats are available for admission to the graduate medical course, leading to the award of the degree of M.B.B.S. of Gujarat University.

Prospective students for an undergraduate course leading towards a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)degree must have completed an HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with at least 50% marks.
