The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was established in November 1945 as a national-level apex advisory body with the aim of conducting a comprehensive survey of the available facilities for technical education and promoting development in a coordinated and integrated manner across the country. The AICTE Act was formulated to establish the council, intending to facilitate proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education system throughout India. Its objectives include promoting qualitative improvements in technical education alongside planned quantitative growth, as well as regulating and maintaining norms and standards within the technical education system and related matters.

Established under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Act No. XXII of 1989 by the Government of Maharashtra, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University initially operated as a Unitary University. However, in 2016, the Government converted it into an Affiliating Technological University through Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Act No. XXIX of 2014, expanding its jurisdiction to encompass the entire state of Maharashtra. Currently, the University affiliates with 272 institutes, catering to a total student population of 1,36,534.
