Bidhan Chandra College, Rishra, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, is situated in the heart of the industrial belt in the Serampore Sub-Division of Hooghly District in W.B. It was established in 1957 after the name of illustrious Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister and architect of modern West Bengal. The college owes its existence to the munificent charity of Birkmyre Education Trust as also to the well-wishers of the college like the Late Shribhusan Bose, Late Pannalal Mukherjee, Late Principal Kanai Lal Ganguly, and others who made laudable efforts in its making. The in-campus setting of the institution immediately nullifies the din and bustle of the busy G.T. Road and its surrounding. The moment one crosses the main entrance of the college, it becomes impossible for him or her to fight shy of the refreshing ambiance-an ambiance with a panoramic view of the holy Bhagirathi with a strand line stretching over around hundred meters covered with amazing lush foliage which virtually transforms the campus into an emerald idyllic aura.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

The College Library caters to the academic need of the students as well as the members of the teaching and non-teaching staff from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday and from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Saturday for the Day Section and it is open from the Evening Section from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Library Card/ Reading Room Cards issued to the students during the beginning of their first-year classes are to be produced to make use of the library and the Cards are to be renewed at the beginning of each academic session. Career support service is also provided by the library for the benefit of the interested user. Strict silence and order must be observed by all in the Library. Only two books will be issued per card to the General course students and three books to the Hons. Course students for a fortnight only. Books must be returned within the due date failing which a fine of Re.1/- (one per day will be imposed). If any defect, writing, or marking is noticed in a book that is being borrowed, that should be intimated to the librarian immediately. Failure to do this checking renders is liable to be considered responsible for defects noticed on the return of the book.

Magazines, Journals, Periodicals, and Reference Books superscribed “Not to be issued” or “Confined to Library” can be used within the Reading Room only.

Library Card is not transferable and it must be returned at the time of leaving the college or the end of each academic session. Library Clearance Certificate from the Librarian is indispensable to a sent-up student to fill in the form for the respective University Examination. A lost card may be replaced by a new one, on payment of Rs.10/- as a fine. The students shall be provided library facilities based on their attendance and extra library facilities shall be provided to the students who have secured attendance more than 75% in the class and have shown excellence in their respective academic performances. e-Library (under the N-LIST program of INFLIBNET Center, Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat) facility is also available through which users can access e-resources (e-Journals & e-Books).

Laboratory:

The college has separate laboratories for Physics, Electronics, Computer Science & Geography departments. There was a Nano Science Research Laboratory in the Department of Electronics funded by DST, Govt. of India.

Canteen:

A canteen provides refreshments to both the students and the staff of the College at a subsidized rate.

Admission

Students are selected for admission by the Admission Committee of the College according to the admission policy of the college and the rules and regulations prescribed by the University of Calcutta. The students shall have to purchase the booklet entitled “ Admission Regulations 2009” at the time of submitting their Application Forms for admission to the College.  The students desirous of getting admission will have to satisfy the requirements prescribed by “ Admission Regulations 2008”, C.U., and the college authority. The application in the prescribed form will have to be submitted within the notified date. The form is to be filled in by the candidate’s handwriting and must be accompanied by attested photocopies of the mark sheet of the last examination passed, admit card or certificate of Madhyamik Pariksha or equivalent examination, duly attested by the Head of the institution last attended by the student. All students, selected for admission, will have to produce those documents in original and furnish two recent stamp-sized photographs and requisite fees at the time of admission. It is to be noted that students will be admitted strictly according to the marks obtained in the H.S./(10+2) examination and mere submission of filled-in application forms does not guarantee admission. All admissions are provisional, subject to the approval of the University of  Calcutta.

As per Govt. rules & orders seat reservation is available for S.C./S.T./OBC/ Physically handicapped students. The students who have shown their extraordinary performance in state or national-level sports and games (both outdoor and indoor) shall be given preference at the time of admission.

Placements

The Placement Cell of Bidhan Chandra College functioning from the session 2016-17 as a liaison between the students of final year and different industrial establishments, corporate houses, etc. It provides the platform for campus interviews, and organizes training programs, group discussions, mock interviews, etc., to enhance the job prospects of students and prepare them to face the competing corporate world. The various workshops and career counseling session organized by the Career and Counselling Cell also caters to the objective of the Placement Cell.
