Established in 1947 Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College is one of the most renowned colleges of the state under the aegis of the University of Calcutta. The founder and Principal of the college Sri Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharya, a visionary, started the college with only a handful of girl students on the premises of Bhavani Girls’ School, and the college was then known as Howrah Girls’ College. On his demise, the college was renamed after its founder Principal. With its humble beginning the college flourished through its journey of more than 70 years and at present boasts a basket of 27 departments which is perhaps the largest in terms of academic discipline in a college under CU. There is no doubt that Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College Howrah has successfully enlightened generations of women to such a degree that they have emerged as triumphant empowered individuals both at home and in the world.

Infrastructure and facilities:

The college authority ensures optimal allocation and utilization of the available financial recourses for the maintenance and upkeep of different facilities by holding regular meetings of various committees constituted for this purpose and using its own fund and grants.

Laboratory- 

Stock Registered is regularly maintained by lab technicians and supervised by HODs of the concerned departments. Regular maintenance of Computer Laboratory equipment is done by Laboratory Assistant along with the Laboratory attendant and they are headed by the faculty in charge. Allotment for the requirement for the purchase of consumables and other such elements is placed and approved every year by the Finance Sub Committee. The calibration, repair, and maintenance of sophisticated lab equipment are done by the technicians of related owner enterprises. The microscopes used for biological and geological experiments are annually cleaned and maintained by the concerned departments and the record of maintenance is maintained by lab technicians and supervised by HODs of the concerned departments. There is systematic disposal of waste of all types such as bio-degradable chemical/chemical and e-waste.

Library-

The requirement and list of books are taken from the concerned departments and HoDs are involved in the process. The finalized list of required books is duly approved and signed by the Principal. Koha and OPAC are in use in the Library which are renewed every year. Every year at the beginning of the session, students are motivated to register themselves in the library to use INFLIBNET and NDLI. Computers are provided in the library for e-resources for the students. The Library has a special facility for visually challenged students by providing some braille books. Students have open access to the racks. Library staff takes regular measures for the relocation of books used under the supervision of the two college Librarians. Other issues such as weeding out of old titles, schedule of issues/ return of books, etc. are chalked out / resolved by the library committee. Once a year  appropriate pest control measures are adopted in the  library

Classrooms-

The college has a building committee for the maintenance and upkeep of infrastructure. At the departmental level, HoDs submit their requirements to the Principal regarding classroom furniture and others. The college development fund is utilized for the maintenance and minor repair of furniture and other electrical types of equipment. The campus cleanliness is maintained by the House Keeping Agency appointed by the authority of the college. Students are sensitized regarding cleanliness and motivated for energy conservation by careful use of electricity in classrooms also regarding water usage there are technicians, masons, plumbers, and carpenters deputed by management who ensure the maintenance of classrooms and related infrastructure.

Additionally : 

Regular cleaning of water tanks, proper garbage disposal, pest control, landscaping, and maintenance of lawns is done by Institute concern Employees.  College campus maintenance is monitored through regular inspection.  Upkeep of all facilities and cleanliness of the environment in men’s and women’s hostel is maintained through the Hostel monitoring committee. Outsourcing is done for maintenance and repair of IT infrastructure such as computers, and internet facilities including Wi-Fi and broadband Updating of software is done by lab assistants.

Scholarship:

Candidates who are regular in classes, financially weak, and do not get any stipend or other benefits from Government will get Freeships/Fee Concession. Every year, students belonging to backward classes or minority classes receive a stipend according to their category respectively.
