Bose Institute is a public research institute in India and also one of its oldest. The institute was established in 1917 by Acharya Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, the father of modern scientific research in the Indian subcontinent. Bose was its director for the first twenty years till his demise.

Since its inception, the institute has been visited by numerous supporters, including the writer Aldous Huxley (1926) and foreign heads of state such as King Albert I of Belgium (1925) and President of the USSR Brezhnev (1959). Many Nobel Prize winners from different countries have been honored over the decades, including Neils Bohr, Archibald Hill, Robert Millikan, Frédéric Joliot-Curie, Irene Joliot-Curie, Joshua Lederberg, Patrick Blackett, Sir John Cockroft, Arthur Kornberg, Robert Synge and Gerhard Herzberg, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Paul Crutzen, Richard Ernst, Har Gobind Khorana, Sir George Porter, Sir Anthony Leggett, Harald zur Hausen, Sir Richard Roberts, Derek Barton, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Ada Yonath, etc. attended the institute. The Institute has also been visited by many distinguished scholars such as Ronald Fisher, George Gamow, Sir Harold Jeffreys, E. Newton Harvey, John D. Bernal, Sir Harold Spencer Jones, Harlow Shapley, Farrington Daniels, etc.

The Bose Institute Library, a national pride, was founded in 1917 by Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose. It is a dedicated research library intended primarily for research personnelVolume. Teachers and scientists as well as employees of the institute. It is also widely used by professors and researchers from other institutes and universities in Kolkata. and West Bengal. A new library wing was opened in Acharya J.C. Bose Centenary Campus” in Kankurgachi, Kolkata in 1983. The library offers library services through various branches in addition to an extensive collection of books in the field of physical and biological sciences. The systematic recording of acquisitions began in this library in 1937. The first successful book was entitled "Space, Time, and Gravity" by A.S. Eddington (1929).
Workshop:
The development of research tools has always been an integral part of the academic culture at the Bose Institute. All J.C. instrumentsBose is designed and manufactured in-house. That tradition continues today, making the Atelier a key division of the Bose Institute. The workshop plays a key role in meeting the high standards of our institute, from the manufacture of the tools to the maintenance of the electrical system. Currently, the Bose Institute workshop consists of different departments: i) Mechanical Department ii) Carpentry Department iii) Warehouse iv) Transport v) Refrigeration Department. vi) and finally the electrical unit (both on the main campus and on the Jubilee campus).
We are a national pioneer in research on astroparticle physics and cosmic rays, foundations of quantum physics, and interdisciplinary physics.
The institute has conducted path-breaking research in the fields of plant sciences, structural biology, molecular biology, biomedical sciences, and biotechnology.
