In 2016, Ministry of Human Resource Development (Department of Higher Education), Government of India, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), conferred the status of ‘deemed to be university’ under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 to the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS), Choglamsar, Leh (Ladakh).

Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS) is a centrally-owned institute that was declared to be a University in the year the year 2016. The institute, although it was founded around 1959, it has been through numerous changes. However, the site of the institute has a negative impact on its operation, however the remote location contributes to the popularly accepted principles of peace-based studies and the development of students. The institute currently focuses on providing knowledge in the area of Buddhist philosophy and Buddhist logic as well as its culture, history, and the arts.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure directly at a glance can show the capabilities of the college. An adequate infrastructure along with a qualified teachers and staff is the primary requirements for students. Library

The library of CIBS (Central Institute for Buddhist Studies) contains more than 32000 volumes. The majority of these books are in Tibetan, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Pali, and Urdu languages. The diversity of languages helps protect the culture, so students can read without fear on history, religion literature, philosophy languages, political science and sociology, sports Computer studies, Sowa Rigpa medicine, etc. The library can be used in a simple way thanks to the Slim Thunmi Software.

Hostel

Three hostels accommodate the students at the institution. Students are also provided with the facilities to cook in the hostels. Each Hostel is staffed by a warden and the cooking department includes a head cook.

Sports

Because of the remoteness of the college and the high cost of sports, an A-grade facility isn't easy to find. But, the institute has a sports coach. Games like football, cricket as well as chess and carom are all playable. Students also are able to participate in numerous state and district-level competitions.

Scholarships

CIBS is completely funded through the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India and was given the budget that is 2585.75 crores in the fiscal year 2018-19, to implement diverse initiatives.

The majority of students who study at CIBS or at any of the branches, or the feeder Gonpa/Nunnery schools are from the remote regions in the region and are part of the Scheduled Tribe community. This is why the Institute under its Tribunal Sub-Plan, distributes free Text/ Note Books to all students and also provides an annual salary.

The year 2018 saw 19 books valued at approximately INR 22.77 lakhs were distributed for free among students of CIBS along with its affiliated branches as well as feeder schools.

Furthermore, 675 students from CIBS receive an annual stipend that ranges from INR 820 up to INR 1010. Additionally students at the feeder and branch schools of CIBS are also able to receive an amount of money.

The institute annually awards INR 161.62 lakhs to students for award, merit scholarship, or research grants.

Admissions

Being the most prestigious institution for Buddhist studies within the Ladakh region, those who are interested in pursuing the path of Buddhist Literature, Philosophy and practices begin in the early stages, at school stage. Admission to UG and PG courses is made on the basis of passing the qualifying test. In the Ph.D. program requires applicants to pass an admissions test and interview in conjunction with CBS before they are granted admission. The traditional Buddhist Arts and Skill Development programs, in addition to the diploma and certificate programs must be passed an interview before they are accepted into the program.
