The Centre for Development Studies (CDS) was established as an autonomous social science research institute on 19 October 1970.  It was the leadership and vision of Shri C. Achutha Menon, the then Chief Minister of Kerala that led to the creation of several research centers in Kerala in different disciplines related to the development of the State. He was able to persuade legendary development economist Professor K. N. Raj to set up the Centre and provide intellectual leadership. Professor Raj continued to remain the driving force behind all academic activities of CDS for over two decades. CDS was also fortunate to have Laurie Baker, a radically innovative architect, visualize and design its campus and buildings in a distinctive but cost-effective manner. The architectural splendor of the CDS campus is the result of this vision and effort of Laurie Baker.

Ever since its inception, CDS has accorded high priority to building up a good library in social sciences. It is now one of the leading social science research and reference libraries in the country with a rich collection of books, journals, publications of other research institutes (national and international), and government publications. The library collection is over one hundred and fifty thousand titles covering development studies, economics, sociology, demography, statistics, history, political science, and other allied subjects. It subscribes to 230 journals currently. In addition, it receives about 120 journals by way of gifts or exchanges. The library is maintaining an exchange program of publications with a number of national and international organizations.

I.T Infrastructure:

In tune with its professed goal of providing necessary IT services to the faculty and students of the Centre, the Computing wing of the Centre is equipped with the necessary organizational and computing resources.

Wifi:

CDS campus is fully WI-Fi enabled. All the buildings on the campus are equipped with a Wi-Fi facility. Wi-Fi facility is also available in the guest house and the hostels for students.

Guest Room/Waiting Room:

The CDS Guest House is in the distinctive architectural tradition of Laurie Baker, who conceived the campus. The 14 rooms in two buildings located close to the cafeteria are double occupancy. The college provides standard facilities in each. Guests have access to wifi and a spacious living room with a television.

Boys Hostel:

CDS offers on-campus residential facilities for students enrolled in the MA, M.Phil, and Ph.D. programs. The college has five modern hostels have 90 rooms.

Girls Hostel:
