The City College was founded on January 6, 1879, initially as a secondary school (City School). Sadharan Brahmo Samaj was founded in 1878. The management soon decided to work in the field of education. The school was converted into a college in 1881. The establishment was founded by the late Mr. Ananda Mohan Bose.A., Lawyer and first Indian adventurer of Cambridge University. The college played an important role in the Bengali Renaissance. 

In 1961, by order of the University Scholarship Committee, the various branches of the Municipal College were converted into separate colleges. Infrastructure and Facilities:

City College has a large and well-maintained campus and offers a tranquil learning environment. The buildings are modern and equipped with the latest technology from City College, which facilitates teaching and teacher development. The classrooms, units, and laboratories of the City College are spacious, comfortable, and designed to ensure the highest quality of education. The library is excellent too, with a huge range of books, online resources, and knowledgeable librarians.

Common Room:

The college has a large common room equipped for indoor games that remains open during university opening hours. Many magazines, including some popular Anglo-Bengali magazines, and a selection of works by famous authors are available for students to use in the common room. English and Bengali newspapers are also available to students. There are opportunities for indoor games such as table tennis, billiards, chess, etc. 

Gymnasium: 

The college has a modern and well-equipped gymnasium where students can build their strength and fitness at any time during their studies. To help them choose the right training program, the college has appointed two qualified coaches.

Canteen:

There are several cafeterias on the college campus. Some of these canteens are reserved for students. There is a faculty canteen in the staff common room. Several department canteens also take care of the needs of the employees in the individual departments.

Library:

Brief Profile provides an overview of the library facilities available at City College. Thanks to a long tradition of joint efforts by library staff, we strive to meet the modern needs of our users, despite some infrastructural limitations, by offering various services in a personalized and hospitable environment. Currently, the library offers its services mainly in manual mode. However, due to current requirements, we have started to automate the service. An INTERNET connection is available to users. We're moving toward more complete automation, but not necessarily without human contact.

Mission

The objectives of the City College were to open “a high-class English Institution”, and to spread among the “younger generation of that time” the moral and highly liberal religious principles of mankind.

Vision

The Institution was opened with the objective of educating Indian students of all races and creeds on an improved and comprehensive plan. Apart from the university syllabi, students were given training in various other subjects including music, science, gymnastics, and moral science for building their character. Special care was taken for the moral education of the students.
