The Vellayani College of Agriculture was founded in May 1955 and continues to function as a center for undergraduate and graduate education. The institution was established in a palatial building owned by the royal family of the former state of Travancore. Within a few years, the college had enough power to rival any other major agricultural institution in India. Postgraduate studies leading to a master's degree. (adj.) and Dr. Graduate degrees were introduced at the college in 1962 and 1965, respectively. The concurrent development of College Farm provided an opportunity for locally relevant work experience for B.Studies Sc. (Ag.) and research work for Msgr. in. (Aug.) and dr. Students.
When the Agricultural University, Faculty of Agriculture, was established in Kerala in 1972, Vellayani grew enough to become the main component of the college With the incorporation of this institution into the Agricultural University, agricultural education and research in the country have undergone tremendous changes and developments. The college introduced a "trimester" teaching system with "internal assessment" which proved to be an ideal new system in the field of agricultural education. Teaching is currently taking place in a coupled “semester system”. The Vellayani College of Agriculture is now the central center for agricultural research and education in the southern state.
At the college level, the emphasis is on training students in all agricultural activities. They must grow all of the state's major crops in small plots on a college farm as part of their "Work Experience" program. In the final year of their studies, they undergo intensive field training with Krishi Bhavans in the Faculty of Agriculture and at the university's research stations, where they have sufficient exposure to the practical problems of agriculture. This makes the students fully competent to tackle problems in this field in their future careers.
