Established in 1959 at the backdrop of a picturesque landscape, Dhenkanal Autonomous College, Dhenkanal has carved a niche for itself in academic excellence not only in the state but in the country as well. The results of the students testify to this honour. However, an endless pursuit of excellence being the motto, the College is forever making an endeavour to excel itself. To achieve this, it lays emphasis on strategic planning that makes an assessment of its current functioning and the modus operandi of executing a higher mission that includes such crucial aspects like financial planning, budgeting, staffing and academic programming, which, in turn, would essentially relate to matching institutional commitments and the real, concrete benefits to the students.

In addition to many a plan, the College intends to materialize, its primary mission which is to lay utmost emphasis on academic excellence and to reach the pinnacle of glory. It aims at effecting radical changes in the syllabi of all the programmes and in pedagogy. But it intends to develop the Commerce programme to the maximum possible extent. And there are reasons. The College provides Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in Commerce. The performance of the students continues to be excellent. The rationale for this thrust on Commerce has to do with the business-friendly environment of the town. There are top-quality steel plants in the town such as Bhusan, and there is NALCO in Angul, a nearby place. These plants provide employment opportunities to the students. Considering the technical nature of the subject, Commerce students are much in demand. Apart from this consideration, the College intends to upgrade the Commerce programme to a centre of higher research.

Facilities and Infrastructure

Residential Accommodations:

The College has two hostels for separately for Boys and Girls and named as “Kapilash” and “Upasana” respectively. The Boys hostel has a capacity to accommodate 220 students, and Girls hostel has the capacity to accommodate 164 students. The seats are allotted to the students purely on the basis of qualifying marks. The College has appointed senior teachers of the College as Hostel Superintendents to manage the day-to-day affairs of the hostels.

Library:

The College Library has been named as Nanak Bhawan and contains more than 51, 150 text and reference books and can accommodate more than 200 students at a time. The students are allowed to have photocopy facilities of important components of books, journals, and periodical of their requirement. A Network Resource Center (NRS) is working under the reference library where students and teachers get internet facility to access various journals and textbooks online. The Library remains open on all working days from 7.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Books are lent to students and the employees of the college. A large no. of books are purchased every year to enhance the strength of the library.

Besides, an well-equipped reading room with sitting facility of around 50 people has been earmarked inside the garden “Eden”. Magazines, news papers, books for competitive examinations and novels of famous authors are made available for students, researchers and faculty members of the College. The College has also developed a Lending Library with 35,711 numbers of books which are mean for students.

Auditorium:

The College has developed a state-of-the-art Auditorium and is frequently used for presentations, seminars, fests, events of the college. The College Auditorium has a fixed stage and can accommodate more than four hundred of audience comfortably. It is a perfect venue for musical, dance, theatre and film performances, as well as lectures, conferences and graduations.

Computer Lab:

The College has two separate computer lab with 30 computers each for B.Sc (Computer Science) and M.Sc (Computer Science) respectively. The Lab is well equipped with original Windows Professional, Advanced Server, and Programming software with internet connectivity. The College being member of various on-line Journals, extend the facility to students to browse the sites, and refer to national and international journals and periods to broaden their horizon of knowledge.

Smart class:

Classrooms, these are the main arena where effective learning takes place. This is the place where students learn all the skills and facts that will lead them to become leaders in the real world. Today’s new education culture demands the teachers to change their teaching style to be more engaging and interactive, and to fill the gap, meet the need of the students, the college has equipped some of classrooms with latest technologies like projectors, computers with latest teaching software which help to capture students attention. These classrooms have been named as SMART Classrooms.

Language laboratory

The Language Lab with latest software has been designed to groom the students for their future assignments. The students though continuous practice learn how to use English effectively and with ease in the professional world. Training in soft-skills help the students fine-tune their capabilities and realize their potentials.

Gymnasium:

The College has a fully furnished multi-gym comprising of Powerlifting, Weightlifting and Dead lift. Facilities are available for Cricket, Football, Athletics, Badminton, and Kho-Kho for the students in the College premises. The College has a large playground, gymnasium and equipments which are necessary for the above sports.

Playground:

The College has a Playground having an inbuilt track for field events and organizes different types of games as an annual event. The winners are recognized in the annual function of the College. Adequate numbers of Basketball, Volleyball and Ball Badminton courts are available. In addition to outdoor courts, indoor courts for Carom, Table Tennis and Shuttle Badminton both for men and women, are also available in the College.

Cafe/Mess Facility:

The College provides canteen facility inside the college premises in which tea, snacks, cold drinks, ice cream, breakfast, lunch and dinner are available for students and staff.
