Rabindra Bharati University, founded on 8th May 1962 under Rabindra Bharati Act of Govt. of West Bengal, 1961, to mark the birth centenary of the poet Rabindranath Tagore, is the third university, to come into existence in the city of Kolkata. As conceived by Dr. Bidhan Chandra. Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, this temple of learning dedicated to the memory of the poet, has been able to justify to a great extent its existence as a center for promoting, extending, and disseminating Tagore’s ideas in various branches of Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Humanities and Social Science. In the year 2001, Rabindra Bharati University had been accredited and awarded four-star status by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). The University has been reaccredited with a Grade A and a 3.10 CGPA Score in February 2016. The Centre for Distance and Online Education (previously known as the Directorate of Distance Education) was established in July 2002 [vide G.O. No. 803-Edn(U)/IU(RB)-09/2002, dated 2nd July 2002] with the aim of disseminating knowledge to learners located in remote areas of West Bengal.The territorial jurisdiction of the University is the whole of the state of West Bengal as per the Rabindra Bharati Act of the Government of West Bengal, 1961.

Infrastructure and facilities:
RBU DDE provides many facilities to its students to help them in their education and facilitate growth in their field of knowledge. They have 50+ Learner Support Centers (LSU)/ Study centers where the students will participate in the Personal Contact Program (PCP), where they will get to interact with resource personnel who will provide advice and counseling in their subjects. PCP for practical subjects will be organized at the main campus of RBU or at University approved laboratories.
Each student is provided Self Learning Material (SLM), which is a self-contained unit/ module prepared course-wise for every topic in the program syllabus.

RBU DDE provides its student-faculty with years of experience and training in their following subjects, who work to impart the best knowledge they can to strengthen their student's education and training as professionals.
Admissions:
To be eligible for the MA Bengali, English, Sanskrit & Political Science courses, candidates need to qualify 10+2+3 in a relevant subject, with a minimum of 300 marks at the graduate level from an institute recognized by the UGC.
For the MA Education course, candidates must have qualified 10+2 and graduated B.Ed with a minimum of 300 marks from an institute recognized by the UGC.
Candidates in addition to 10+2 in relevant fields must have an honors degree in Geography at the graduate level to be eligible for the MA Geography course.
To be eligible for the MA Environmental Studies/Vocal Music/Rabindra Sangeet/ MSW courses, candidates must have qualified for any general or professional graduate degree from an institute recognized by the UGC.
