The university, originally known as the Andhra Pradesh Open University, was established on 26 August 1982 by the APOU Act of the State Parliament (APOU Act 1982). Later, on 26 October 1991, the Andhra Pradesh government renamed the university after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University.
