Durgapur Government College, established in 1969, stood out at the time of its inception in being the only government college serving the intellectual needs of a whole generation of young learners from Burdwan (now Paschim Bardhaman and Purba Bardhaman) Bankura, Birbhum, and Purulia. Despite experiencing overwhelming changes, the institution continues to stand out as a distinguished house of learning, nurturing the positive qualities of both students and staff and the only government college in the district of Paschim Bardhaman.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

This College Library plays a significant role in the search for knowledge. It serves as the workshop for the entire college- students; faculties and other employees. It aims to support the teaching-learning activity in the college and also provide the students with updated knowledge and ensure the optimum utilization of the available resources. The facility of ‘Partial Open Access System’ adopted in the library, Library Management Software KOHA ( Ver 16.11.09) has been installed and documents computerized partially. The library was started with about 575 books in 1971, at present it has very rich collections of printed books on various branches of knowledge and some CDs/DVDs. The Library Building is located adjacent to the Administrative Building which is the centre of the college campus. It occupies about 517 sq. metre and its collection being books is about 80,000 books. Its collections are being increased day by day as funds come from the State Government Grant and the UGC Grant. The library is provided with proper ventilation, lighting & fans/AC, and CCTV Surveillance. Moreover, every department has its library for easy and quick access to specialized course-wise documents.

Computer Lab:

The college has an excellent IT Infrastructure facility for the students. The computer laboratory is equipped with nine desktop computers, three monochrome LaserJet (A4) printers, one RGB LaserJet (A3)printer, and two flatbed scanners. Due to a lack of adequate space two high-resolution petrological microscopes (one with photomicrographic attachment and a display screen), one precision balance, and one mirror stereoscope with A parallax bar are also housed in the same laboratory. 

Auditorium:

The college has an auditorium facility for events and seminars. Provision for a spacious auditorium with a seating capacity of around 300 people.

Laboratories:

The College has a DFT-FIST fund that was utilized to purchase some equipment such as a UV-Visible Spectrophotometer and Petrological A microscope which can be used by students of all science departments.

Sports:

The college has sports facilities for all students. Students are provided jerseys and shorts for different sports tournaments. Sports items of cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, and athletics are available in the department for practice. Outdoor and Indoor Games: Table Tennis, Chess, Carom.

Admission

Durgapur government college offers bachelor’s courses in all the streams, i.e. Arts, Science, and Commerce, along with post-graduation courses in some fields. At the UG level, the institute offers a B.A. under six specializations, B.Sc. in eight specializations, and a B.Com. degree. Admission to all these courses is granted based on merit. For admission to the PG courses, the candidates must possess a valid B.Sc. degree.

The laying of the foundation stone of Durgapur Government College on 22.01.1969 was the follow-up of an effort to set up a co-educational government-funded institution of higher education in the gradually emerging industrial town of Durgapur.
