The Hyderabad University of English and Foreign Languages was founded in 1958 as the Central Institute of English (CIE). Following the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (First Prime Minister of India) to create an institution that would provide quality English education for teachers, the university is tasked with developing “Educational, Research and Public Facilities for the Teaching of English and Foreign Languages”. and to disseminate languages and literature in India" and "to take appropriate measures for interdisciplinary literary and cultural studies and research and for the development of a critical intercultural understanding of civilization". In addition to regular teacher education programs, the CIE sets standards through various conferences, refresher courses, and curriculum design efforts. During this period, the institute also started Indigenous educational programs in English and published textbooks and later radio lectures. Gradually, the Institute broadened the scope of its objectives, including raising the level of English teaching; conducting appropriate research, and introducing foreign languages. Therefore, in 1972 it was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), and three main foreign languages were added: German, Russian, and French.
