Established to meet the educational needs of the marginalized sections of Shehr-i-Khass society, the Gandhi Memorial College in Srinagar has stood the test of time for over 74 years. Widely known as "Gandhi College", it has fulfilled its vision of being a "knowledge center for all sectors of society". Evidence of this is the long list of its graduates who have left their mark on society as statesmen, politicians, prominent writers, scientists, social reformers, teachers, researchers, and responsible members of civil society. 

The luxury of higher education was available to only a select few in Kashmir, and against this background lived visionaries of Srinagar civil society belonging to the Kashmiri Pandit community, such as Pandit Shive Narayan Fotedar, Pandit BalaKak Dhar, Pandit Jia Lal Kilam and Pandit Amarnath Kak, Pandit Janardhan Teng, Pandit SonaKoul Madan, Pandit Tara Chand Trisal, Pandit Ram Chand Pandita, Pandit Avatar Krishen and Pandit Prem Nath Kanav founded the “Hindu College” and all streams were established in Later after independence, the college was renamed in memory of “Father of the Nation” Mahatma Gandhi as Gandhi Memorial College, Srinagar. It is striking that this institution was "open to all social classes, regardless of caste, faith or religion" from the start - a saying that is still valid today.

Gandhi Memorial College is Affiliated with the University of the Central University of Kashmir (CUK, Srinagar), and is Approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) New Delhi, and Accreditations by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
