Government College (Autonomous), Anantapur was started in 1916. It is the oldest and most prestigious institution in the Rayalaseema area of southern Andhra Pradesh. This college has provided 107 years of excellent education. On July 8, 1916, the college started as the Ceded District College (a Second Grade College). Its first Principal was Sri S. E. Ranganathan. Initially, there were 41 students in different subjects like History, Telugu, Kannada, Sanskrit, and Logic. In the early years, along with the eminent Principal Sri S. E. Ranganathan, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan also taught at the college. He worked as a Tutor in Philosophy.
