Govt. College, Anantapur, started in 1916, is the oldest and the most prestigious institution in Rayalaseema (southern A.P.) area and is often called " The Grand Old Lady of Rayalaseema ". This college has completed nine decades of yeoman service to the noble cause of education.
On 8th July 1916, this college was started as the Ceded District College (A Second Grade College) with Sri S. E.Ranganathan as its first manager. Initially, there were 41 students, divided into the various faculties of History, Telugu, Kannada, Sanskrit and Logic in Part II. In the early years of its operation, besides the eminent Dean, Sri H. E. Ranganathan, Dr S. Radhakrishnan, a teacher of the teachers, ennobled the institution with his service as a member of staff. He worked as a philosophy tutor in college.

Residential Accommodation
Separate boys and girls' hostels with high security are available on the university campus. Boys and girls have two hostels with WiFi services for UG and PG, which can accommodate around 150 students each with good infrastructure. A well-equipped gymnasium is set up for the students of the hostel to develop the physical abilities of boys and girls. A hygienic mess is attached to hostels.
The Library
The treasury of books and periodicals is the centre of intellectual activity in any institution. The Central Library works for its readers with a concern for creativity and innovation, predecessors of Research and Development. It has a well-equipped library that accumulates over 10,000 volumes of selected books in various engineering, management, and basic and general science subjects.
Canteen
It provides good quality fresh Snacks, cool drinks, coffee, tea, and other food items in a hygienic, healthy way which suits the pockets of the student. It is immaculate and very well maintained.
Sport
Physical education is strongly aimed at improving the physical and mental health of each player. This results in the development of dynamic personalities. Sports activities and achievements have helped many people get better job opportunities. The clean area with the natural gift of fresh air is an inspiring resource, which motivates the player to perform better. Sport has the same weight as academics. All sports activities are encouraged by making all facilities available when students participate in intercollegiate, intra-college, and other tournaments.
