Infrastructure and Facilities Gokhale Memorial Girls' College

Library:

The College has an open-access air-conditioned library well stocked with text and reference books, both print and e-resources. It has two stack rooms including a mezzanine block. The reading room space is adjacent to the stack room. The Libsys LSEase Library Management Software is installed for the maintenance of the library database. Partial automation was introduced in 2014 with LSEase Web Centric 3 Users Software and subsequently upgraded to LSEase Web Centric 5 Users Software in April 2018. The barcoding process was initiated in 2014 and completed in 2017. At present the library is fully automated. There is an automated catalog system and barcoding has made easy systematic management of issues, returns, and retrieval of books. The mezzanine section is equipped with computers and serves as the UGC Resource Network Center where users can access N-List e-resources. The Centre was first established in 2006 in the library under the UGC Xth Five Year Plan and assistance was provided for the purchase of computers and internet connection. At present, there are 4 computers and 163.41 MBPS bandwidth internet connectivity to access the e-resources from INFLIBNET and other websites. By 2020 around 600 users were enrolled in the UGC N-LIST program. In 2020, the GMGC Central Library website was created. This is an important step in facilitating the faculty and students with direct and individual access to INFLIBNET services and other e-resources within the library reading room and also outside. Each year the new entrants undergo a mandatory Library Orientation Program conducted by the Librarian. Students from different disciplines are made aware of the catalog system and its use, the basic library rules, and institutional stipulations on library use. They are directed to maintain strict silence, decorum, and discipline inside the library.

Each student is issued two lending library cards for their entire program. Students are required to renew them in every academic session. They are also required to return their cards and books before they fill in the forms for appearing in the final examination to obtain clearance certificates.

Classrooms:

Classrooms are naturally lighted. Each departmental classroom is equipped with computers, internet connections, a departmental library, and office almirahs. Departmental computers are used regularly for academic purposes both by the Faculty and the students. All have anti-virus programs installed. Computer accessories are maintained in a clean environment. The College maintains strict norms of cleanliness. All classrooms and corridors are kept spic and span throughout the day. They are swept twice a day, once in the morning before the commencement of classes and then at the end of the day after the students have left the premises. Blackboards and the furniture are dusted at the end of the day to maintain their preparedness for the next day's classes. Littering is strictly prohibited. Students are guided to drop their disposals in garbage tins kept outside the classrooms. Charts, posters, and notices are displayed on pinboards. Students are constantly advised to use furniture properly and help the institution economize on energy by switching off lights, fans, and computers when not in use. All classroom facilities such as fans, electric lights, and computers are well-maintained. Repairs are undertaken conscientiously. Minor glitches are taken care of by the trained in-house electrician and replacements are made as and when necessary.

Laboratories:

The Geography Lab has topographical maps, satellite imageries, aerial photographs, geographical maps, rock and mineral specimens, clinometer, Abney Level, Dumpy Level, prismatic compass, transit theodolite, laser distance meter, rotameter, barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, rain gauge, soil testing kit for the teaching of the practical component of the undergraduate course. In addition, there are six desktop computers for teaching geographical information systems with LAN connections. These instruments are serviced before every university examination to maintain their preparedness. There are globes, generating globe and wall maps. Old rare maps are repaired with cloth backing. Tracing paper rolls are replaced every six months. There are station models, reader's digest atlas, and district planning maps of areas that have been visited for field surveys. There are five tracing tables for the students. There are also wooden and plastic geometry boxes for board work. Scientific calculators are replaced with newer editions when required.

The Chemistry Lab is a very sensitive and accident-prone area, has vital safety issues and procedures, and proper precautions are undertaken Awareness is the most fundamental rule of operating a Chemistry Lab.

Sports Facilities:

College ground facilitates Annual Sports, Badminton Tournament, Geography Practical Classes, and competitive and recreational student activities. The grass is mowed regularly. Ground surfacing is done with sand. Courts and tracks are drawn with eco-friendly dust-lime. Indoor games and a gym are maintained in the students' common room. Sports goods inventory is checked by the Sports Committee. Sports equipment, cups, and shields are maintained by support staff and NSS Unit-1 of the College.

Admission Gokhale Memorial Girls' College

The College offers Bachelors of Science (B.Sc.) and Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) Honors and Major programs. B.Sc. The honors/ Major program is of three-year duration with six and two specializations respectively. Similarly, B.A. Honors/ Major program is also of three-year duration with nine and two specializations respectively.

In Gokhale College, selection for provisional admission to any B.A. / B.Sc. (Major/ Honours) course is done based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

Students who have passed the 10+2/ HSC examination from West Bengal or any equivalent Board and have passed in English with full marks not less than 100 are considered eligible for admission.

Candidates belonging to SC/ST, must obtain a minimum of 40% marks in the aggregate and 40% marks in the subject or related subject.
