Established in 1916, the Government College of Anantapur is the oldest and most prestigious institution in the Rayalaseema region (South PA). This boarding school has rendered 107 years of rural service to the noble cause of education. On  July 8, 1916, this college was incorporated as  Ceded District College (Secondary College) with Sri S.E. Ranganathan as the first director. In the beginning, Part II had 41 students from different departments of history, Telugu, Kannada, Sanskrit and logic. In the early years of his career, he was at the side of the outstanding director Sri S.E.Ranganathan, Dr S. Radhakrishnan, a teacher professor, ennobled the cause of education at the institute by serving as a staff member. He worked as a philosophy teacher at a university.   The College is affiliated with Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur. The UGC granted this university the status of autonomy for a period of six years in the 2016-2017 academic year, which is regularly renewed. The university has introduced a semester system with the CBCS formula as part of the autonomous voting system. The college has received three "A" accreditations from the NAAC. It was also named the best university in the  National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and India Today rankings.
