The Government Arts College in Thiruvananthapuram has a long and glorious history. Thiruvananthapuram, originally a part of HH The Maharaja's College, was separated from its parent institution in 1924 (see GO.R.OC No. 395 of 23 Legis, E of May 91, 1924 of the Government of S.S.The Maharaja of Travancore) in the art departments and called H.H. The Maharajah's College of Arts. The parent school is named after H.H. Maharaja College of Science. 

When the new college opened on July 4, 1924, the departments of history, economics, Sanskrit, Dravidian languages, and English were inherited from the mother university.  At that time, specialist courses in English, history, and economics were also held there. The philosophical faculty was opened in 1925. Ten years later, in 1935, the college began graduate studies in Malayalam, followed the next year by graduate studies in Sanskrit.
