Initially there were 75 students and 7 teacher-educators. In the beginning the college was affiliated to the University of Madras. The first Principal was Mrs. N. Shanmugasundram.

(part-time) programme was started in 1973 but it was stopped in the year 2000 following the instructions received from NCTE. M.Phil. (Part-time) and PhD (part-time) was started in 1993. In 2009-10 M.Ed. (full-time) programme was started with the recognition of NCTE. From 1982 to June 2007 the College functioned with affiliation to Bharathiar University. However, from July 2008 the college has been affiliated with Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, Chennai.

Admission for B.Ed. programme is done through single-window counselling. Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education, Chennai was the nodal agency which conducted the Single Window Counselling from 2007-08 to 2013-14. The principal of that college was the secretary of admissions and the guidelines were communicated as G.O. from the Higher Education Department. M.Ed. admissions were conducted by the college after calling for applications through newspapers. Admissions were made following the reservation policy and the guidelines of the Tamil Nadu government. For the year 2014-15 admissions for both B.Ed. and M.Ed. programmes were done by Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, Chennai following the same guidelines. From 2015-16 B.Ed. Admissions are made by Lady Willingdon IASE, Chennai. Information about admissions is given wide publicity through newspapers and the Nodal College website (http://www.ladywillingdoniase.com).
