Government College of Engineering, Amravati (GCOEA), established in 1964 by the Government of Maharashtra, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest engineering institutes in the state. Initially affiliated with Nagpur University, it later became a part of Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University (SGBAU) in 1982. Commencing with disciplines in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, GCOEA expanded its offerings over time in response to national demands, introducing programs such as Electronic & Telecommunication, Computer Science & Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Information Technology. The institute further enriched its academic portfolio by introducing part-time postgraduate courses in Electrical Power Systems in 1986, followed by P.G. Courses in Thermal Power Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Electronics Systems and Communication. Presently, GCOEA offers seven full-time PG programs catering to various specializations in engineering.
Recognizing its academic prowess, the institute received autonomy from UGC in 2005–06, which was subsequently extended up to 2020. All eligible programs have received accreditation from the NBA, and GCOEA holds the esteemed 2(f) and 12(B) status under the UGC Act-1956, authorizing it to confer Master's degrees. In terms of recognition, GCOEA has consistently featured in prestigious rankings such as Outlook India’s Top Engineering Colleges and Dataquest’s Top Engineering Colleges in India. The institute's impressive performance in these rankings is reflective of its commitment to academic excellence and industry relevance.
GCOEA boasts a sprawling campus spanning 114 acres on Amravati Walgaon Road, with state-of-the-art infrastructure maintained by the Public Works Department of the Government of Maharashtra. Each department has dedicated facilities, complemented by separate hostel accommodations for male and female students, as well as residential quarters for staff. The campus is equipped with modern amenities, including a campus-wide network with 10 Mbit/s connectivity and WiFi coverage across all departments, hostels, and residential areas.

Notably, Tata Consultancy Services has honored GCOEA as a Premium Category college, underscoring its reputation for producing industry-ready graduates.
