The Government of Maharashtra, with the aim and vision of spreading engineering education in rural and tribal areas of Maharashtra, established the Government College of Engineering at Karad in 1960.  The college is affiliated with Shivaji University in Kolhapur and has functioned as a major center of learning for many years. Over the years, the college has trained approximately 7,200 engineers and more than 300 computer scientists through the master's degree in computer applications, which is unique in Shivaji University's Engineering Department.
