Government Degree College Sopore Kashmir came into existence in 1949 as a secondary college of humble origin when it was located in the present Sopore Boys High School Institute, with late Professor Mufti Jalal-ud-din as its first principal. The foundation stone of the university was officially laid by the Prime Minister, the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah on 27 September 1951, and in 1951 there were 50-odd students. Currently, 5,500 students, approximately 2,500 female students, study in the institution, which makes it the largest multidisciplinary cooperative educational institution in the valley. Since its inception, the college has been an icon of academic excellence, keeping pace with ever-changing aspirations and modernity. Over the years, under the capable guidance of an experienced director and staff, the institution has hosted an illustrious and endless list of dignitaries and produced men of worth and reputation in various walks of social life. They have widely praised the name of the institution and are proud of their alma mater.

Since 1951, the college has evolved into a multi-faculty institution with faculties of Arts, Science, Business and Management, and Computer Applications. All scholars have significant potential, research, and teaching experience.

Since January 2000, this premier college has housed the IGNOU Study Centre, which provides a platform for imparting education to a large population through distance learning.
