The Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram, was founded by the Government of Kerala in August 1999 and provides technical education under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. The institution is located in Barton Hill, which is two kilometers from the city center of Trivandrum.

The Government Engineering College at Barton Hill was established by the Government of Kerala in the academic year 1999-2000. In the short time since its founding, the university has achieved significant academic excellence. The college is affiliated with Kerala University for the latest batch of B.tech and APJ Abdul Kalam Kerala Technological University for all other batches. It is under the administrative control of the Director of Technical Education of the Government of Kerala. 

The College is situated in the picturesque hills of Barton Hill and the land was donated by HM Sri. Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the last reigning maharajah of the princely state of Travancore. The college began operations in November 1999 in the buildings of the former Barton Hill Girls' High School in Kunnukuzha. The first director of the college was Prof. GJayasankar and Dr. BIJULAL D. is the current Dean of the University.

Government Engineering College is affiliated with Kerala University and APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Infrastructure and Facilities:

Government Engineering College has a large and well-maintained campus and offers a tranquil learning environment. The buildings are modern and equipped with the latest technology from Government Engineering College, which facilitates teaching and teacher development. The classrooms, units, and laboratories of the Government Engineering College are spacious, comfortable, and designed to ensure the highest quality of education. The library is excellent too, with a huge range of books, online resources, and knowledgeable librarians.

Library: 

In any academic institution, the library plays an important role in disseminating knowledge. In fact, the atmosphere of the library reflects the quality of education offered by the Government Engineering College. Barton Hill Campus (GECBH) has recognized the importance of the academic atmosphere required in a library and has evolved in that direction since its inception. The current location of the Central Library is well structured. Clear shelves are easy to use. A special area is reserved for the digital library. Our university was founded and operated in the academic year 1999/2000 together with the Technical Central Library. 

Women Cell: 

The women's department begins its work with programs that increase the social commitment of young people. The college held a week-long celebration of the Day of Kindness called Nivrithi. This included visiting Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, spending time with these children, and providing them with the necessary items. This included bringing former refugees from Pulayanarkotta to our college, spending the day with them, and organizing meals and cultural events for them. 

Our college celebrates monthly women's day which started on February 12th with a flash mob at our college On this day, the college launched the “Bridge the Gap” campaign, which aims to improve women's menstrual hygiene.  As part of this awareness, outreach programs have been conducted in shelters for women and the less fortunate who have less access to this type of knowledge. 

Campus Wi-Fi: 

The college is a member of the National Knowledge Network (NKN), a high-speed backbone network connecting major educational and research institutions. NKN is operated by the Government of India's National Informatics Network (NIC). NKN provides the college with a capacity of 1000 Mb/s (1 Gb/s). In addition, an Internet connection with a capacity of 16 Mb/s was downloaded from BSNL. This connection is kept as a backup in the rare event of an NKN connection failure.

Hostel: 

The college has a beautiful building around the corner from our College - Ladies Hostel, a safe house for female students. This hostel is built eco-friendly to give residents green and fresh breath. It is filled with 53 rooms that can accommodate 216 students including M.Tech and B.Tech students. It is an attractive retreat for students as it has spacious rooms, adequate lighting, study desks, and all the necessary equipment. Each of the 4 floors (including the basement) is delimited by long verandas that offer a gentle path thanks to the open square in the middle. 

College Canteen: 

Our cafeteria, an important part of student life, is the busiest place on campus, not only for physical refreshment, but also for chatting, chatting, chatting, and also for working on assignments and projects.  Mensa is a small building with room for about 100 members and a separate area for staff and students. Various drinks and food are available here.

Admission: 

Admission to the UG programs at this college is through a Centralized Admissions Procedure (CAP) based solely on the grade of the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) administered by the Government of Kerala.  This college is the choice of the best college graduates from Central and Eastern Europe. Admission to the GUT program is through a centralized recruitment process through the Technical Education Department. All students only have to pay government fees.
